Should I Use WordPress, SquareSpace or Wix For My Website?

Create Your Own Beautiful Website

Creating a website can be an exciting yet daunting task, especially when choosing the right platform to bring your vision to life. Content Management Systems (or CMS) like WordPress, SquareSpace, and Wix are three of the most popular website builders available today, each offering unique features and benefits. In this article, we’ll compare these platforms to help you decide which one best suits your needs.

WordPress: The Powerhouse of Customization

Pros:

Flexibility and Customization:

WordPress is an open-source platform, meaning you have complete control over your website’s design and functionality. You can choose from thousands of themes and plugins to create a site that is truly unique.

Scalability:

Whether you're starting a small blog or building a complex e-commerce site, WordPress can grow with you. It’s used by major brands and is highly scalable.

SEO-Friendly:

WordPress is known for its strong SEO capabilities. With plugins like Yoast SEO, or AIOSEO (All in One SEO), you can optimize your site for search engines easily.

Community Support:

With a large and active community, you can find plenty of tutorials, forums, and resources to help you troubleshoot and improve your site.

Cons:

Learning Curve:

WordPress can be challenging for beginners. The vast array of options and settings might be overwhelming if you’re not tech-savvy.

Maintenance:

You are responsible for updates, backups, and security. While there are plugins to help with these tasks, it requires a hands-on approach.

Hacker/Spammer Magnet:

If you’re not on top of your maintenance, there is a good chance that your website could be hacked or spammed. There are bots constantly scouring the web, searching for websites with weak login infrastructure or outdated plug-ins. Oftentimes, your blog will be bombarded with spam if you don’t implement anti-spam plugins and software. You will likely have to pay extra if you want to protect yourselves from these hackers and spammers.

SquareSpace: The Simple Choice

Pros:

Ease of Use:

SquareSpace offers a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface, making it easy for anyone to create a professional-looking website without any coding knowledge.

Beautiful Templates:

SquareSpace offers high-quality, aesthetically pleasing templates. These designs are perfect for creatives who want a visually stunning site.

All-In-One Platform:

SquareSpace handles hosting, security, and maintenance, allowing you to focus solely on building and managing your content.

Customer Support:

With 24/7 customer support, you can get help whenever you need it.

Cons:

Limited Customization:

While the templates are beautiful, customization options are somewhat limited compared to WordPress. You might find it challenging to create a highly unique design.

Cost:

SquareSpace can be more expensive than WordPress, especially when considering the limited scalability.

Limited Features:

Certain add-ons and plugins that you are used to on Wix or WordPress are not offered at all within SquareSpace. In their forum, they have feature requests that users can vote on. There is no telling when these features will be implemented, even if they are extremely popular requests.

Wix: The Game Changer

Pros:

Wix Studio Pro - A Robust Programmers Interface:

For the design and programmer savvy, Wix Studio Pro has opened the doors for a plethora of back end development and customization features. Additionally, they offer plenty of CSS customization and stylization options. Building your website with Wix Studio Pro automates the placements of everything; the interface incorporates responsive design more readily and is more user intuitive than other WYSIWYGs (What You See Is What You Get).

Intuitive Interface:

Wix offers an incredibly intuitive drag-and-drop editor, making it one of the easiest website builders to use.

Variety of Templates:

With hundreds of templates to choose from, you can find a design that fits your needs. Plus, Wix’s templates are highly customizable.

All-In-One Solution:

Like SquareSpace, Wix takes care of hosting, security, and maintenance. This makes it ideal for users who want a hassle-free experience.

App Market:

Wix has an extensive app market, allowing you to add extra functionality to your site with just a few clicks.

Cons:

Less Control (This only applies to the standard Wix Editor, not the professional counterpart, Wix Studio):

While Wix offers a lot of customization options, it doesn’t provide the same level of control as WordPress. Advanced users might find it limiting.

SEO Limitations:

Although Wix has made significant improvements in their SEO integration, it still lags behind WordPress in terms of SEO capabilities. For example, it does not allow plugins like ahrefs to monitor keyword performance.

So Which Platform Should You Choose For Your Website?

Which Platform Should You Choose?

Choose WordPress if:

  • You need a highly customizable and scalable website.

  • You’re comfortable with a steeper learning curve and handling maintenance tasks.

  • SEO is a critical factor for your site’s success.

Choose SquareSpace if:

  • You want a beautiful, professional-looking website with minimal effort.

  • You prefer an all-in-one platform with excellent customer support.

  • Design aesthetics are a top priority for you.

Choose Wix if:

  • You’re a beginner looking for the easiest way to build a website.

  • You want a wide range of templates and customization options without needing to code.

  • You prefer a platform that handles hosting, security, and maintenance.

Budget Considerations to Keep In Mind

No matter which Content Management System (CMS) you choose, the more features and capabilities you implement, the more expensive it will be. For example, if you want the WYSIWIG editor in Wordpress, just like in SquareSpace or Wix, you will have to pay extra, or for plugins like DIVI and Elementor Pro.

WordPress:

Wordpress has a lot of plugins and add-ons. The basics are free, but oftentimes you have to unlock the premium or pro versions for the features that you need. Some popular plugins that you will need include: WooCommerce (it is initially free, but many of their add-ons have different monthly or annual fees), WordFence, and anti-spam/hacker plugins. All of these plugins have fees. Keep in mind that if you hire a programmer, you will need to pay them for regular maintenance.

Although this option is robust, it is the most expensive of the three CMS’s. If you have a low budget and you are not planning on scaling, you may want to consider SquareSpace or Wix instead.

SquareSpace:

If you want something simple, basic, with stupid SEO, and is relatively affordable, SquareSpace is for you. Note that Squarespace has upgraded their interface to version 7.1, which is more robust than version 7.0. If you have your site built in previous versions, it is worth it to build a new one in version 7.1 for all the new features.

Wix:

Streative Digital is a Wix partner, and we have a lot to offer. We utilize the professional version of Wix Studio rather than the basic Wix Editor. Just like SquareSpace and WordPress, Wix add-on features will cost extra. Different business needs will require different out-of-pocket expenses. So before you create your website, please be mindful of the unanticipated fees that may come with the specific features you want. These features may include: stores, subscriptions, members-only, and different contact forms.

Everything considered, The best platform for your website depends on your specific needs and technical expertise. WordPress offers unmatched flexibility and control, SquareSpace shines with its design and simplicity, and Wix stands out for its user-friendly interface. Consider what matters most to you and make an informed decision to create the website of your dreams.
